Husky Dog Sledding in Tromsø

Friendly husky dogs at a Tromsø dog sledding camp

Visiting Tromsø, Norway in January 2025 was a bucket‑list trip I’ll never forget and the highlight of that trip was the Tromsø husky dog sledding experience in Tromsø. This unforgettable Arctic adventure combines stunning wintry landscapes, lively huskies, and the thrill of driving your own dog sled through snowy terrain. If you’re planning a winter getaway in the Arctic and want to experience true Norwegian adventure, this activity should be at the top of your list.

In this blog post I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about this popular tour.

Meeting Point & Getting There: Starting in Tromsø

My day began early in Tromsø. The meeting point for this husky dog sledding tour was at the bustling Tromsø Havn Prostneset (inside the main entrance hall), where guides checked us in and got everyone ready for the day ahead.

After a quick introduction to the schedule and what to expect, we boarded a comfortable coach and headed out of the city. The scenic 45‑50‑minute bus transfer to Breivikeidet gave us great views of snowy valleys, distant fjords, and the majestic Lyngen Alps.

The weather in January was crisp and cold, with snow blanketing the landscape, ideal conditions for dog sledding.

Gear Up: Staying Warm in Arctic Conditions

Before we even met the huskies, the guides outfitted everyone with all the necessary winter gear, including a thermal winter suit, insulated boots, and warm mittens and a hat.

Once we were fully geared up for the husky dog sledding, everyone gathered for a safety briefing. Our English‑speaking guide explained how to handle the sled, what to expect on the trail, and how to stay safe around the dogs.

Meeting the Huskies

Walking up, the first thing that hit you was the excited barking of the huskies, around 30+ friendly, energetic dogs eager to get moving. These dogs live for the chance to run, and you could feel their enthusiasm jump through the ropes as we approached.

The guides took time to introduce us to the team and explained the daily life of a husky sled dog, how the huskies are trained, and the strong bond that exists between the musher and the dogs.

This wasn’t just a quick meet‑and‑greet, it was an immersive glimpse into a lifestyle that’s part of Arctic culture.

The husky Dog Sledding Ride

After the briefing, it was finally time to hit the trail. Each sled ride was shared 2 people per husky dog sled, one driving, one riding with the opportunity to swap at the halfway point so both people could experience being the musher.

The trail itself takes you through snowy fields and light forest paths with the mountains in the distance. While not an extreme sport, dog sledding is truly exhilarating. The huskies love to run, and even at a comfortable pace you feel a rush of energy and motion through the sled.

Duration & Highlights

During the tour, the actual sled drive portion is approximately 10‑15 minutes out and 10‑15 minutes back, with a photo stop in the middle so you can capture moments of you in action as the dog musher.

It might sound short, but it’s long enough to feel the rhythm between dogs and sled, to absorb the scenery, and to feel genuinely part of this incredible tradition.

Husky Cuddles & Camp Atmosphere

This was one of my favorite parts. After sledding, most people stuck around the husky camp to pet and interact with the dogs. You could see the dogs personalities come alive, some are playful, some are calm but they are all incredibly friendly.

the Best Time to Do husky dog sledding in tromso

Most dog sledding tours in Tromsø run from early December through mid‑April, with January ,when I went, being ideal for snowy conditions and stable weather.

The husky dog sledding is a popular Arctic activity, tours often sell out well in advance, especially in peak winter months. Booking early is one of the best ways to secure your spot.
